Firstly, the topic of "self defence". It was RUSSIOA that acted under the legal concept of "collective pore-emptive self defence". Russia came to the aid of the LPR and DPR, two self-declared independent states, who had been UNDER ATTACK from Ukraine since 2014.

After 8 years of bombardment, shelling, sniping, forced starvation, rape, torture and othewr depravity, Russia came to DEFEND the people of the Donbas from the obscene predations of the Ukrainian Nazi militias.

Secondly, you pose some sort of weird question about Ukraine defending against "Russian genocide". This is absurd, unfounded and 100% counterfactual.

It was Andrey Biletsky, founder and leader of the Ukrainian army unit known as the Azov Battalion, who famously declared that it was Ukraine's mission "to lead the white races of the world against the Semite led Untermenschen" in the East.

It was the Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yatsenyuk, who issued the official decree vowing to "cleanse the subhumans from the land" in Donbas.

And the Ukrainians followed through on that promise.

Prior to Russia's coming to the rescue, the Ukrainian shelling of the civilian population of the Donbas increased 500%. They needed to be defended. Russia came to their defense.
