You are missing the point. Forcing Europeans to buy American LNG was not meant to hurt the Russian economy. It was designed to suppress the EU economy. The greatest threat economically to US hegemony was and is still the possible combination of German technology, skills and manpower with CHEAP and plentiful Russian natural resources. It has been a strategic goal of the US to "kill" the Nordstream project ever since that project was first announced.

So it's not just the "ordinary" Europeans. It is European industry, which can no longer afford the ebergy they need to operate. The EU economy was built on the foundation of cheap and plentiful Russian energy. Now that they have to pay 4-5x the cost for US LNG, Europe is literally "de-industrialising".

The idiotic EU leaders were bamboozled into thinking the USA was their friend. The USA has no friends, no allies. The USA only has INTERESTS. And the USA could not afford to have their economic interests challenged by an increasingly ascendant EU. The US needed to "take out the EU" and above all ensure that Germany could not team up withy Russia.

That is the reason for the war in Ukraine. That is the reason for the sanctions. That is why Germans are going into their forests and cutting down trees for firewood.
