Yes, the US has been outrageously cruel to the people of Ukraine.

US politicians have openly talked about "fighting to the last Ukrainian".

High ranking US officials have declared that the PURPOSE of the conflict in Ukraine, on both the military and economic fronts, is to "weaken Russia" and to cause "regime change in Moscow".

By now it should be clear to everyone - especially given the recent revelations by Hollande, Merkel and Poroshenko regarding the trick they played with the Minsk Accords - that the US has been planning and preparing for this conflict in Ukraine for many years. The military reaction by Russia was one that the US had invited, predicted and anticipated ever since the regime change in Kiev in 2014.

I remind you that Trump was impeached in 2019 - years before the Russian attack - because he had dared to put a pause on sending $400 million in lethal high tech weaponry to Ukraine.

Why was that such a crime?

Because it went against the overriding goal of the US deep state to prepare for the planned military confrontation with Russia in Ukraine - a military confrontation that was on the books even then.
