The point of NATO is that the EU does not need to fund their defense. That is the US's responsibility, and in return the US gets to call the tune to which all their NATO vassals must dance. The US get to station their troops, their forward facing systems, their Aegis Ashore dual use medium range missile launchers, their nuclear bombs and basically whatever the hell they want - anywhere in any NATO "ally's" country - no matter WHAT the local population says. We have seen this play out many times.

The US routinely trucks nuclear weapons and other dangerous items all through Europe - WITHOUT TELLING THE EUROPEANS.

When I lived in Germany the Germans still had some semblance of a nut sack and demonstrated and protested at these clandestine shipments, but that is all over now.

Now the Germans just roll over and say "OK, Spike, whatever you want, Spike, cuz you're my friend, right Spike? You wanna blow up my pipeline? OK, Spike sure thing! Cuz Spike's my friend..."

You see, the US is Spike, and every single damned NATO country is a nutless Chester. And Ukraine is no different. They are a NATO country in all but name. Ukraine has more NATIO munitions and personnel within its borders than half the actual member states do.

NATO is a farce. It has had no valid reason to exists since the Warsaw Pact went away. NATO is just a "fig leaf" to give cover to the USA so it can pursue a policy of global hegemony against Russia. It would be unseemly for the US to have "US bases" all over Europe, and on Russia's border, so they simply call those bases "NATO bases". Have you ever been on a NATO base? I have,. Many. They are all full of Americans. I went to the NATO base in Naples 5 times and never once saw a single soldier or sailor that was not American.

Chester/Ukraine is still being all puffed up and bragging and full of bravado, knowing that they have Spike (USA) supporting them.

Do you really think that Ukraine would have rejected the peace deal in March 2022 if they did NOT have Spike/USA telling them not to?

You are being either incredibly naive or incredibly disingenuous. Which is it?
