That is not true. Their mission was to attack the Israeli military installations surrounding Gaza (which they did) to kill or capture IDF military personnel (which they did) and to take both military personnel and civilians as HOSTAGES to be exchanged for some of the 10,000 Palestinians being held hostage in Israeli prisons under the harshest of conditions.

This they also did.

Civilian deaths occurred, but it is still not clear how many of those were due to Palestinian armed factions besides Hamas (there were at least 4 othewr groups active in the raid) - and most importantly, how many civilians were killed by the IDF with Apache gunshops and tanks, whose commanders had received orders to execute the Hannibal Directive and destroy BOTH the Hamas fighters and their hostages if necessary. We know that the Israeli air force incinerated at leats 70 vehicles carrying hostages at the Nova festival alone, and that tanks blew up houses in Kibbitz Be'eri where dozens of hostages were being held.
