Poppycock. NATO was and remains an instrument of US hegemony. NATO provides the Command & Control structure for the imperial forces, and it provides a "fig leaf" of international legitimacy, a pre-made "coalition of the willing" (as GW Bush would call it) - a moral reason to maintain the massive American military presence in Europe and elsewhere.
