Interesting reading! Thanks for the link! I had heard that Crimea was transferred to the UkSSR because of administrative reasons, namely they wanted to build the major Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in Kherson to provide water to Crimea, and it just made sense organisationally as well as administratively and financially to have both Crimea and the power plant that supplies all of Crimea's water located under the same SSR Administration. This would ensure a smooth relationship between the source of the Crimean water and Crimea itself.

You can see the wisdom in doing this, as after the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, the very first thing the Ukrainians did was SHUT OFF the flow of water from Kakhovka to Crimea.
