I am sorry that you were bamboozled — like so many — by the neoliberal tricks and the confusing rhetoric of the New Democrats. Of COURSE the Democrats embraced trickle down economics. They just phrased it in different terms.
In Clinton’s case, the idea of making the rich richer was framed in their motto: “a rising tide lifts all boats”.
This is the same idea: namely, that when the rich do better, everyone does better.
Of course, it also assumes that everyone has a boat. The neoliberal Democrats were all for the 1%, just like Reagan. They concentrated on boat-owners and ignored the people who were drowning. The way they positively crowed about “ending Welfare as we know it” and ending Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and thereby throwing 10’s of millions of kids into poverty pretty much says it all.
The greatest achievements of the Clinton Administration are all from the Reagan Wish List:
- Ending Welfare
- Tough on Crime bill
- Bank deregulation
- Telecoms deregulation
These are universally acknowledged to be the 5 greatest achievements of the Clinton Presidency. And they are ALL — and I mean ALL — things that Reagan and Bush dreamed of doing, or tried to do but failed.
