I am an admirer of the Russian people. When the US was fighting for its independence from Britain, it was Russia who supported us (as well as France). When the British tried to recapture the USA in 1812, it was Russia who helped us. During our Civil War, the British helped the South, but it was Russia who supported the Union. (North) in its fight to free the slaves.

It was Russia who led the Allies to victory in WWII.

When Israel tried to sink the USS Liberty, it was a Russian ship that came to her aid.

When America was reeling from the attacks of 9/11. it was Russia who was the first to call Bush and offer unqualified support and aid in fighting the terrorists.

I would have to say that Russia and US are natural allies, and the "special relationship" that the US has cultivated with Britain has no logical basis in historical fact.
