Hungary and Czechoslovakia were to some extent anyway the CIA's first tentative trials of the "Color Revolution" process. Although, like so many things that happened in Eastern Europe and in the USSR itself, the revolutions that erupted apparently came as a surprise to the eggheads in Langley.

It will be interesting to see what pressure the US exerts on Hungary now to keep them in NATO.

I do agree with your take on Afghanistan, at least as far as Bin Laden's boys were concerned. The US has never given a flying fig about the Afghans.

The situation, alas, is the same in Ukraine today. It's still all about "weakening Russia" and fighting them, as Lindsay Graham says, "to the last Ukrainian".

Regarding the Color Revolution thing - it is not laughable. It is what the CIA does these days.

Yes, TRADITIONALLY their goal was always to oust socialist leaders and replace them with fascist, anti-communist dictators. But the more important factor was being anti-communist. It just so happens that fascists are traditionally the most devoted anti-communists you could ever hope for.

But that was when there was a USSR to worry about, and the US could brook no left-leaning government that could possibly ally itself with the Communist Superpower.

But once there was no Soviet Union, they changed tack. They could afford to. Once the US became the Lone Superpower, their targets became any government that refused to "play ball" with the US.

Or are you saying that Ukraine was socialist? Is Syria? Is Iran?

Hell, the CIA spent $1.7 BILLION on dirty wars to overthrow Assad. Were they planning to replace him with someone more to the Right? Seriously?

What about Iran? The CIA is working every day to overthrow them. The "Green Revolution" was supposed to do that. Or, if you say the Green Revolution was NOT the CIA plot everyone thinks it was, then what IS the CIA plan for Iran? Replace the Ayatollah with some Persian Generalissimo??? Bring back the Shah's son? Install Reza Pahlavi II on the throne? Come on.

The stated policies of regime change that Washington (and hence the CIA) is pursuing is aimed at non-aligned countries, regardless of the type of government they have. Because, frankly, every government is anti-communist enough to suit them - it's just a question of how much they are willing to prostrate themselves before the US colossus.
